August Reading Plans

How in the world are we already in August?! It’s Magical Readathon month and my TBR definitely reflects that! If you don’t know what Magical Readathon is I will link the intro video HERE. It was created and hosted by the amazing G at Bookroast and is one of the only readathons I do every year. So let’s get into what I’m reading this month!

Magical Readathon TBR:

For the Magical Readathon my career is Star Whisper which means I have a very full schedule of “classes” this term to achieve my goal of becoming a Star Whisper there are some grades I need to get first. For this term I need an O in Art of Illusion a D in Astronomy an O in Lore and a D in Paionics and Divination. So let’s break down how Im doing that this year.

Art of Illusion- O: Levitation Spell- Read without touching the floor or ground:

  • This is one of those prompts that I LOVE having during a Readathon because it’s an easy one to check off. I read most of the time in bed or sitting somewhere curled up, because of this I don’t really need a book for this on however I chose to add my Manga for this one because its so short. So to complete this promote I will be reading Yagi The Bookstore Goat.

Astronomy: D For the D required grades I need to work through the O and Q as well so this one has 3 different promotes to go with it.

  • O is Moon Song Ritual- word in the title from the name of the last song you listened to. At the time creating this TBR the last song I listed too was High Infidelity by Taylor Swift which didn’t leave me with a lot of options for words here; However I did luck out and found the “Ouran High School Host Club Vol 1” by Disco Hatori at my Library which is what I’ll be using for this “class”.
  • Q- Lunar Alignment- Read from a finished series- Lucky for me I am currently reading the Throne of Glass Series which is a finished series so for this on “Empire of Storms” by Sarah J Mass will fulfill this “class”.
  • D- The Blood Moon- Red Cover- G did say during her video for this year that any cover that has read as an eye catching color counts for this one so Im using that for my advantage. “How to Excavate A Heart” by Jack Maia Arlow is my pick for this promote.

Lore- O-Tale of the Guide: Booksellers recommendation.

This one was kind of tricky for me, I made a goal this year to really limit my booking buying as I am saving for a wedding as well right now so I have been using my library a lot this year. While I love going to my libaray I don’t always have the time to go so I wasn’t sure how I was going to do this using the Libby app as I had already gone to the library for the month. Well Libby has this nice feature where the librarians put their picks so that is the section I looked through. I landed on “That Time I got drunk and Saved a Demon” By Kimberly Lemming(spoiler at the time of writing this I have already finished it and can’t wait to review it!)

Psionics and Divination- D

  • O-Introduction to Tarot: Random Tarot generator-same symbol in the title or cover. G had linked a random Tarot Generator in her bio of the video so this is what I used for this and it was almost like luck as on my side. I drew the Tower card(not the best card for everyone but this time I was so happy to see it) which fits in perfectly since I am doing the tandem read for Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn by Sarah J Mass. So for this promote I will be reading “Tower of Dawn”..
  • Q-Reading the Future- Book Set in the Future. I will be picking up “Poster Girl” by Veronica Roth for this one. I have been meaning to pick it up and when I saw it at my library this month I couldn’t pass it up. I am so happy I am able to fit it into this readathon so I know I will make it a priority this month!
  • D- Omen Lily- Lily on the cover or word Lily in the title/ authors name. This one was really hard for me! I didn’t have anything that worked on my TBR already nor did I have a book that I was interested in that fit this. For the one I put the word Lily in the search bar on Libby for audiobooks and found on that fit that sounded good; in turn Readathon fashion I am adding to my TBR instead of removing lol. I will be reading “Makeup Breakup” by Lily Menon. I don’t know a lot about this one since I have never heard of it however it looks to be a romcom book which I will always take in audio format to break up my fantacies

The rest of August TBR:

You would think that with everything that I just listed a above that I would have a full month of reading heading of me and I would need to add anymore books to this madness but I am me and I still have books that I need/want to read this month so lets dive into those.

From my library I have two more graphic novels/ manga and two more novels I would like to get to this month. I know for a fact I will get to the Manga and graphic novel so let’s start there.

  • “There are things I can’t tell you” by Edako Mofumofu This Manga is a BL(Boy love) story Friends since elementary school Kasumi and Kyousuke now have to navigate adulthood and the complications that come with that. They find it hard to talk to even each other and there are feelings left just under the surface.
  • “Check, Please” by Ngoni Ukazu This graphic novel follows Eric Bittle a Former figure skating champion, blogger and amateur patissier as he moves through being a Freshman hockey player at Samewell University and dealing with the unexpected problem of Jack.

Moving on to the two Novels I have out from the libaray that are the two hopefuls for this month:

  • “She gets the girl” by Rachael Lippincott and Alyson derrick. This follows Alex and Molly trying to get the girl(both having different crushes) Alex feels if she can help Molly fall in love she can prove she isnt a selfish flirt to win her ex back; but what happens if maybe the fall in love with each other instead?
  • “The Book of Lost Names” by Kristin Harmel. We follow Eva Traube Abrams a Florida librian when she finds a book she hasnt seen in 65 years in Nazi Germany. The book of Lost names is a religious tome that contians a mysterious code that no one can decipher, but Eva has the key.

That rounds out my library books for the month but I still have my book club which is “Divine Rivals” by Rebecca Ross. This is one I know very little about other than it’s a war against the Gods and enemies to lovers. I don’t like knowing a whole lot about book club books but I’m so excited to read this one!

That ronds out my huge August TBR now off to go make a dent in all those books! until next time!

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier: Book Review

“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again…..”

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, written in the 1938 is considered one of the first Mystery/Thriller novel. In first person perspective the main character is a young woman who falls in love with an older wealthy man, After their spontaneous marriage they arrive back at his mansion. she starts to uncover that maybe not everything is like it seems.

When I fist picked up this book I didnt think I was going to enjoy it at all, but it was a book recommendation from my boyfriend so I had to push though(mainly because he wouldnt let me DNF it lol) but after I got through about 1/3 of the book I fell in love with the story.Looking back at early chapters Im so happy that it was wirtten with a slow start because I gave you that mystious vibe of what is really happening here? The amount of growth I went through as a reader was amazing as well and it was all because of the slow start that I hated at the benning.

I don’t want to say too much about this book because I went in blind for the most part and I think that is the best way to do it honestly. When I read Thrillers I really don’t like knowing a lot about them because I want to be surprised and shocked as I read and I was definitely shocked and surprised by this book. when I first picked this up I had very strong feelings toward certain characters and by the end I was rooting for them hoping they would pull through.

My final thoughts on this very short and brief review(because trust me you don’t want to know much more) is this has now become on of my favorite classic books and will forever hold a place on my top ten books I have read in my life. It was amazing and the only reason it has 4.5 stars in my book instead of a 5 star rating is because of those slow points that sometimes dragged but made the story overall worth it. With the spooky season approaching it should definitely be a novel you pick in the next few months!

Reading Slumps and Plans

August….the month of lofty goals and reading slumps. I went into August to finish my NEWTS for the Magical Readathon…..that did not happen.

I started the month out strong finishing Simon vs the Homosapiens Agenda rather quickly in just 4 days. I started Rebecca (which was a very slow start to say the least) and finished that with in two weeks. However toward the middle to end of the month I had some personal stuff come up and suddenly I barley had the energy to get to work and parent let alone read. So the middle to tail end of the month I did not finish one book! I was in the middle of two( FireFly Lane and Spellslinger) that I loved and couldn’t wait to finish but life had other plans

FireFly Lane I finished as of the first of September and Spellslinger was a library book that I unfortunately didn’t get a chance to finish So in the month of August I finished 2 books which isn’t great but it could have been worse I suppose.

Now moving on the September plans. As much as I hate reading slumps I think it happened at a great time and here is why; September is my birth month so my plan was to read only books that made me happy or brought back good memories which is perfect right after a reading slump so I can remember why I love reading! With that being said I don’t have any set in stone reading plans, I have books that I want to get to but I’m not setting a TBR of things I need to read so here is what I would like to get to this month:

The Bridal Quartet by Nora Roberts: 4 childhood best friends who loved playing “Wedding Day” now all grown up and playing for real! Wedding planning is serious business but when you are surround by love all day when does that leave time for love of your own?

Through 4 books we follow the 4 best friends, Mac, Emma, Laurel, and Parker as the navigate the world of business as the masters of a perfect wedding while struggle to make heads or tails of their own love life’s.

City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare: this is the 4th book the the mortal instruments series So not a whole lot I can say without spoiling the other 3 books. Just know it’s angst filled goodness that I can’t wait to dive back into!

Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness: Diana Bishop a descendant if witches discovers an enchanted alchemical manuscript while in an Oxford library. Decided she wants nothing to do with witchcraft or sorcery she buries it in the stacks hoping no one still find it again. Little did she know just set off a chain of events in the underworld that is will now have to navigate whether she likes it or not.

Alright those are my very loose reading plans for this month and I will probably add in a few audiobooks here and there as well as mood read what is on my shelf’s but the goal is to fall back in love with reading this month.

I hope everyone had a great August and here is to September! Let me know what your reading Plans are this month! And as always linked below will be any social media links as well as anything else I think you may find useful. Until next time everyone!

Avoiding Reading to Reading Addict

Reading has become such a big part of my life and since having my daughter(who is 5) I really started thinking about how that seemed to happen. I was a kid who HATED school for the life of me I couldn’t stand it! I had a hard time learning and everything just felt hard and I felt stupid and fell behind for a good part of my early years in school. Reading was a challenge like no other it was difficult and I felt out of place next to my classmates that had such an easy time with it. Now I know this all seems a tad odd coming from a woman who can read 300+ pages in a week and feel like I haven’t picked up a book all week, but bear with me here I promise we get to a point.

So for the first oh I’d say 3 1/2 to 4 years of my child reading life I hated reading. Fits would be thrown there would be tears and anxiety all over picking up a book and meeting my AR (Allearcted Reading) goal and filling out my reading log(yes we had one of those and yes I’m pretty sure it almost caused an ulcer by the age 9). Then one day and I remember this day pretty vividly, I was 13 in the 5th grade( we will work that math out on a different post) and I was in my “study hall”. To understand this part you need to know I went to a very very VERY small private school….I was the only 5th grader so it wasn’t like a normal study hall I basically just went down to the 3rd and 4th grade classroom and hung out for the afternoon once or twice a week. I had just finished the book I had been reading and was being made to pick out a new book. Stumbling over the countless titles from Bunnicula, the Vampire Bunny, to books on State facts( which were very easy to read and memorize, that has now resulted in me knowing a lot of random facts about random states) I found a book with a girl on the cover that looked to be about my age; picking it up I started reading thinking it couldn’t be so bad

That night I learned the power of a great novel. The book I had picked up was apart of the Alice series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. With it being so many years ago I cant remember for sure which book first started me down this journey of being an avid reader but I hazard a guess that it was The Agony of Alice- Can’t anyone show Alice how to be a teenager? . Being 13 years old at the time I had so many questions that I didn’t know how to ask and I had no idea how to be a teenager or what lay ahead of me which is scary! This book offered to me more understand than anything I have been able to find since; it let me know that everything I was going through was normal and other people feel the same way! That’s pretty big for a girl who had no idea who or what she would become. This series is the most basic plot I think I have ever found, It follow Alice a young girl who lost her mom when she was in elementary school and lives with her dad and older brother. As the reader we follow her from middle school all the way through to college, watching her trials and accomplishments that every teenager has.

” The Alice series follows the main character, Alice McKinley, known as “Al” to her father and older brother, as she grows up in Silver Spring, Maryland. Her mother died of leukemia when she was five. Alice has a hard time at first growing up in an all-male household but her father and brother, Lester, prove to be honest and open about almost everything Alice has to talk about. ” Wikipedia

Looking back now as an adult(and parent) I feel like some of the books in this series were very inappropriate for me at the time I was reading them. Not because of topic being unrealistic but because I was a 14 year old girl reading about adult problems that tend to happen as you move through High School and get older; however I think they would still be great for any young girl or boy as long as the were aging with Alice instead of reading through all the books in about a years times.

And there you have it, how I went from hating all things bookish to have 3 filled bookshelves in my small 2 bedroom apartment. One book changed my life. That night I took the book home and read it all the way through in one night, the next day every teacher in the school nearly fainted in utter shock that I had read a book in one night and was actively looking for the next one in the series. I continued reading Alice until I was a sophomore in High School and I hope to some day own a copy of all the books again simply because they had that kind of impact in my life.

You can always become a reader no matter the age or past feelings all it takes it a story that you connect with.

Do any of you have a book or book series like this? I would love to hear about them! Linked below are all my social medias as always as well as links to the Alice Wikipedia and Amazon where you can buy a copy of the books yourself

Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli: Book Review

“People really are like houses with vast rooms and tiny windows. And maybe its a good thing, that way we never stop surprising each other.”

I know I am a little late on the Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda bandwagon, so I’m pretty sure we all know what the premise of this book is; but just to run through it very quickly:

Simon is a 17 year who feels like he has a pretty great life, great friends and a family who loves him and has activities and hobbies he really enjoys. However there is one part of his life no one know about ….He is gay. This book focuses on Simon’s struggles of coming out and find comfort in an online pen pal that is going through the same struggles. As the two boys grow closer their feelings for each other seem to unravel along with everything else in their day to day lives.

This book was amazing! I don’t know of any other way to describe it. Getting to meet Simon and his friends was nothing but pure joy seeing how their lives intertwined and how their personalities meshed to compliment each other so well. Also seeing the relationship build with Simon and Blue had me needing to know how everything would end more than Simon I feel like!

Alright so with my initial gush being over lets talk for real, Becky Albertalli wrote with book every much they way someone would speak which made it an easy and fast read to fall in love with. Most YA contemporaries I am cringing at how the characters made choices or react to a certain problem, however with this I felt like everything was realistically portrayed. This novel had the tell tale signs of a coming of age story mixed with finding yourself in a Modern world that still isn’t the most accepting place to be all packaged in a easy to understand and connect to novel.

Simon is a young boy not all to sure how to come out to family and friends, when he meets Blue and they start emailing back and forth they both start to see how life could be and the kind of life they want. Seeing Simon growth was both amazing and heart wrenching. A few times in the book I just wanted to give him big hug and tell him everything is going to be alright. Watching both Simon and Blue change through the story was an incredible journey not to mention the change and evolution of the side characters as well.

All around this was a great book 5 out of 5 Stars for me and I am so happy I picked it up! If you are looking for a consumable read definitely check it out!

Hi My name is Mallorie…..

Welcome to Mallorie’s Reading Nook where all things bookish are discussed! To start off this blog I thought doing a “Get to Know Me” Tag would be fun! Since this is a book related blog most questions will be book related with some person sprinkled in. Of corse I will be linking the blog I found these questions on down below, now lets get started!

Books:

Can you stop reading at any time, or does it have to be a certain page or chapter?
I prefer to stop reading at the end of the chapter but if I need to I can stop in the middle of a page….but its not something I do if I can help it.

Do you eat or drink anything whilst reading?
I typically always have a cup of coffee, water, or tea and maybe an occasional soda while I read. I however cant eat while no idea why lol

Can you read listening to music or watching TV?
I listen to Ambient Mixer while I read, just as background noise. If I listen to music or watch T.V I end up getting distracted and not get a lot of reading done. The Ambient Mixers I have been loving are the Common Rooms of Hogwart and Stark Town(because I am a nerd lol)

One book at a time, or several at once?
I can read more than one book at a time but even when I do that I tend to favor one over the others in amount of time reading.

Reading at home or everywhere?
Everywhere! I always have book with me or in my bag even if I know there is a good chance I wont get to read while I’m out I cant leave the house without a book.

Reading out loud or silently in your head?
Depends. Most of the time I read silently but every once in a while I will read a chapter or two out loud. Especially if I have been reading for a long time it tends to wake me up.

Do you read ahead, or skip pages? I use to do this a lot when I was younger I would skip ahead a few chapters to make sure the story was going in a direction I enjoyed. However now that i am older I just cant do that anymore….maybe is personal growth or maybe its more self control….I guess we will never know.

Breaking the spine or keeping it new?
I break the spines….I know I’m bad… I have been trying to work on this but its second nature for me because when I read paperback books I fold the book covers over while I read without thinking about. I have gotten better but I would like to get to a point where I don’t do it at all.

Do you write books, or just read them?
I just read them. I write for fun but most of the time that is just for me to goof off with and have fun. Its never something I think I would want to pursue.

5 of my favourite books: (In no particular order)
1. The Lucky One – Nicholas Sparks
2. FireFly Lane – Kristen Hannah
3. Harry Potter Series – J. K. Rowling
4. The Bridal Quartet – Nora Roberts
5. I am still looking for my 5th all time favorite book

What is the last book you read?
Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda (review is coming soon)
